Research Topic: Microbiology of Arctic Permafrost Soils Microorganisms play crucial roles in carbon and nitrogen cycling in soils. However, their identity, functioning and responses to environmental changes are largely unknown in permafrost soils of the Arctic. Applying environmental genomics methodologies, we study bacteria and archaea in high-organic peat soils and cryoturbated permafrost soils of Siberia and Spitsbergen to identify the major microbial players in soil organic carbon degradation, methane and nitrogen cycling leading to greenhouse gas emissions. We are particularly interested in the responses of the microbial communities to increasing temperatures. http://www.polarresearch.at/faculty/group-urich/ http://genetics-ecology.univie.ac.at/urich.html
