Bijpraten over de trekroute van de Noordse stern


Vorig jaar hebben we acht noordse sternen teruggevangen, die al voor de crowdfunding actie rugsteuntstern.nl met een geolocator waren uitgerust. Tim van Oosten heeft als student een verslag geschreven over de resultaten en dit is de belangrijkste figuur uit het verslag. Schematisch zijn hier de vliegroutes van de 8 sternen weergegeven. Iedere lijn is een unieke vogel. Deel A laat de trekroute naar het zuiden zien, deel B de trekroute naar het noorden. De sternen zijn tussen 3 en 25 november aangekomen in hun overwinteringsgebied bij Antarctica. Tussen 3 en 24 april vertrokken ze weer naar het noorden. Daarbij volgen ze de passaatwinden: oostenwind op het zuidelijk halfrond en westenwind op het noordeijk halfrond. Thomas Zaw is nu druk bezig deze gegevens verder uit te werken en van 10 tot 17 maart gaat maarten naar een workshop in Noorwegen om meer te leren over de voedselbeschikbaarjheid van sternen in het Kongsfjord gedurende het broedseizoen.
