retreating glaciers | 13 July 2026 |
|
In the post of our first bird count along te fjord, I was already showing glacier retreat in Kongsfjord. Now I have several pictures showing the retreat of the front of the glacier by coloured lines for different years. The Lovenbreen south east to Ny-Ålesund ![]() The Blomstrandbreen north of the eiland Blomstrand ![]() The northern arm of the Kongsbreen ![]() The southern branch of the Kronebreen and the Kongsvegen ![]() Aerial picture of the glaciers ![]() The last three pictures are taken from https://nyalesundresearch.no/2025/11/record-glacier-retreat-in-ny-alesund-monitoring-insights-from-2025/ Nowadays, the front positions of the glaciers can easily be seen from aerial photography. But note that there is also a tremendous reduction in the height of the glacier-end. I remember a steep starting point at the front. Now the front is much lower. The fast retreating glaciers are in touch with the fjord water. As soon as the glaciers are on land, the retreat becomes less, as you can see at the Blomstrand glacier, the Conway glacier and the three Lovenglaciers. In 1990, I could hear the rumble of falling ice in Ny-Ålesund. First I thought it was a thunder storm coming. But than I realised it was ice falling in the fjord. Now the distance is so much more, and we hardly hear the ice falling in the fjord until we get close with a boat. Note the difference in the last figure compared with the photo taken from toposvalbard.npolar.no in this post in the weblog. Do you remember the picture from 1918 en 2002 of the Blomstrandbreen? Watch here. By the way, the air is several degrees colder close to the ice masses of glaciers. | |
